The practical training of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is limited to mentoring by experienced physicians, while providing patient care in a supervised setting. This challenges the learning process, because training opportunities cannot be provided on demand. Moreover, trainees will always be under pressure, because the time to learn is restricted by the discomfort of an awake patient. This application can help you learn to acquire the 28 standard TEE views defined by the America Society of Echocardiography, in your own time, using high-fidelity, simulated echocardiography images.

A major challenge in learning echocardiography is the complex spatial arrangement of cardiac structures, which makes the relation between echocardiographic imaging planes and cardiac anatomy difficult to understand. To address this challenge, this app provides optional real-time annotation of all cardiac chambers and large vessels, for any orientation chosen by the user. This way, clear anatomic references can be made available all the time, without losing focus on the 2-dimensional imaging plane.

This app provides you with a user interface that resembles a traditional TEE control module. It can automatically recognise the 28 standard TEE views and can notify you when they are displayed correctly. It also offers interactive guidance to help you find the right control settings for each of them. These features make this application a great tool to help improve your TEE skills, without time pressure, anywhere you can use your iPhone.
